After trying this authentic French toast recipe, I can guarantee you that you will never settle for the regular French toast any more.

Once you have this authentic French toast recipe, you will never go back to the regular French toast with the pre-sliced   bread.

One time when we visited my uncle in Rochester, NY, he took us to his favorite diner.  My husband ordered their authentic French toast which is exactly how they call it on the menu.  Since then, he loves the way how to serve this traditional dish.
And we cook it at home at least once a month for brunch.

Because cooking this recipe so often, it gives me plenty of opportunities to try out different bakery bread.  Baguette is best for this dish.  However, some baguette is hard as a rock.  It is so hard that it even doesn’t absorb the custard. 

So, how to pick a perfect loaf of baguette?  It should be crispy, of course.  But when you put a little bit of pressure and squeeze it, it should be slightly soft and bounce back.  If it’s so hard that you can’t even squeeze it, I highly recommend
you to walk away.

Regular French bread is definitely better than any pre-sliced bread.  But it gets soggy easily. 

Throughout all these years, one of the best alternatives I discovered is the Target Market Pantry brand – Demi French Bread. 

It fulfills all the requirements I just talked about.  This bread is so good that you can put some spread on it to make a sandwich the night before and never gets soggy.  If you happen to have a Target close by you, give it a try.


1 Loaf of Baguette (trims both ends to give the flat side to stand on the skillet; slice about 1” thick at an angle for each slice)
3 Eggs (beaten)
½ Cup Milk


1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
½ teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
1 pinch of Salt
2 tablespoons Butter (divided)
2 tablespoons Canola Oil (divided)

(For serving only)
Maple Syrup

Target Market Pantry Brand - Demi French Bread
This bread has the perfect texture to make this Authentic French Toast recipe. It is also great for sandwiches.
  1. Mix eggs, milk, vanilla extract and cinnamon together in a mixing bowl
  2. Place the bread single layer on a rimmed baking sheet
  3. Pour the egg mixture on top
  4. Turn the bread over to make sure every cut side is coated with egg mixture
  5. Let the bread sits in room temperature for 20 minutes
    (Side note – While waiting, use these 20 minutes to core the strawberries and serve with the French toast later.  You may also have enough time to start cooking up some sausages)
  6. Preheat skillet at medium high heat
  7. Add 1 tablespoon each of butter and canola oil
  8. When butter melted, put bread in
  9. Cook about 2-3 minutes each side or until golden brown
  10. Repeat the last 4 steps until all bread is cooked
  11. Serve along with butter and maple syrup


Using Canola oil can help butter to reach at higher temperature.  Plus, it is better to your health instead of using purely butter.

Add ice-cream on top of the French toast and turn it to be a nice warm dessert.
