Why People Like Eat with Their Hands?

Hi!,

My son was talking with me how much he enjoyed the trip back in Hong Kong last August visiting with my family.

He also mentioned that there was no one eating with their hands while we were there. His conclusion came from over 14 days of visits with 3 meals a day. And each meal is different Chinese province and Asian cuisines.

With that said, that conversation was the inspiration of this month’s newsletter.

When and Why Do We Eat with Our Hands?

You may wonder why people like to eat with their hands. Think about the time when you did that without a second thought. It is convenient, easy and, the best of all, you can take a big bite without even worrying about the consequences, such as making a big mess or getting your clothes and face dirty. It feels so free while you devour your food with big or small bites whenever and however you want.

In America, we all love to eat with our hands. It's casual and easy. We do that in big gatherings and at home as well. But other than that, we do eat with silverware majority of time while we eat.

But there are several countries in the world that they eat with their hands all time. Just name a few, they are India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria and so forth. Generally speaking, countries in South Asia, Middle East, Africa and some part of Southeast Asia.

In short, if you travel out of your home country, culture and custom likes this may make you feel uncomfortable. But try your best to follow the locals as a respect and adventure.

Do Chinese Eat With Hands?

As you know I am a Chinese, I always share things from my heritage perspective. Chinese eat with chopsticks all time. There are some rare occasions that Chinese eat with their hands, especially seafood.

Unlike in America, all seafood is sold and served with shells and bones in Chinese culture. It is mainly because of luck and blessings. As a result, a Chinese seafood dinner means all hands on deck.

With that said, plenty of seafood restaurants would provide a big bowl of tea with a couple of slices of lemon in it for hand washing and plenty of hand cloths for drying.

Why do Chinese eat with their chopsticks most of the time? Eating seafood with hands is a rare incident that you see Chinese eat with their hands. If any Chinese does that in any occasions, people would consider that behavior is rude, barbaric and uncivilized.

Looking deeper, chicken drumsticks would be served as a whole in America. In a Chinese dinner, at home or not, they are cut in sizes that chopsticks can easily pick it up to take a bite. That prevents eating with your hands.
