The Dos and Don'ts with Dishwasher

I must admit that there were times that I didn’t listen to the advice from the wise and paid the ultimate price afterwards. Dishwasher was one of those things. Here are the items that I highly recommend you NOT to put into it, but hand wash:

1) Knives - we are talking about sharp knives here that cut meat and vegetables. The water pressure inside the dishwasher is super strong and will dull them easily.

2) Non-stick cookware - many brands of this kind of cookware would have the instructions. Also, many of them are dishwasher safe and recommend to wash on the upper rack. After so many trials, I realized that when the cookware was brand new, it didn’t look like there's any problem. Little do we realize that after the first few washes in the dishwasher, even following the manufacturer instructions, it shortened the life cycle of these nonstick cookware. Manufacturers would love to see you buying a brand new set of cookware sooner than later.

My recommendation is that handwash them and disregard what the instructions telling you.

3) Bakeware - I bet you have seen some burnt food stuck on a bakeware. It takes some soaking and aggressive rubbing to get rid of it.

And if you put that dirty bakeware with burnt food into a dishwasher, you will find out very soon that your task of cleaning it gets tougher.

So, instead of putting your bakeware into the dishwasher, try your best to soak it in soapy water with some baking soda in it for a while before handwashing it.

4) Anything handcrafted - most of them are specifically indicated to you that hand wash only. I learn my lesson in a hard way that someone gave me a beautiful glassware. Since it is passed it down from someone else, I didn’t know the washing instructions. After a few washes in the dishwasher, the beautiful design started to fade away. When I touch it, anywhere with color coming off from the glassware.

Take a look of the picture above and you will understand what I meant.

Sand blown glassware - I learned about this when we visited the Corning Museum. They are in the same category as handcrafted items.

Keep them all away from the dishwasher, but hand wash.

Do Chinese Use Dishwasher?

Many Chinese live in big cities and apartments. So, even if they have dishwasher, it is mostly the kitchen counter one which is smaller than a regular size microwave oven. Chinese are used to handwashing their dishes.

How to Line Baking Pan with Foil

We learned that dishwasher doesn't help much to clean up burnt food on bakeware. The easiest and the most economic way is to line your bakeware with aluminum foil whenever it is possible.

I cook this BBQ pork tenderloin quite often at home. You will love this method and thank me later.
