Working from Home with Kids in the Summer

Hi!,

Time flies. June is here. Some children had already started their school summer vacations.

Working parents, you most likely still juggle between work and taking care of your children. It may be even tougher for some of you while the kids are out of school. What kind of activities can you do with them or assign to them while you are working? For years, I changed a lot to adjust the age appropriate activities as mine getting older and older. We are going to explore a few.

Wish you all a great and productive summer.

Things to Do

Just like many parents, I still need to work while my kid is out of school for summer. When my son was younger, he would go to summer camp. But he stopped going since 11. So here are a few things I do with my child or let him do it independently while I work from home with him:

1) About a week before school wrapping up, I would write down a plan for myself to plan out what I want my child to accomplish. As your child(ren) gets older, you can plan it together.

2) Some homework during a long summer vacation is a great thing. Little do you know that it set them up for another successful school year. I have done this many years. As much as my husband always disagrees with me, it shows the benefits year after year.

Depending on how much your child can handle. The older they get, the more assignments you can have them to do. The goal is to have one hour each day or every other day dedicated to do that. It is very easy to find some great and age appropriate assignments for your child(ren). For instance, your kid is moving up to 5th grade and needing some maths exercises. You can type in these keywords to search on the internet, “4th grade maths exercises”. If he/she is more advanced, you can look for 5th grade instead.

3) Since you are going to be in the house all the time, assuming you are working from home, you can assign lunch prep to your kid(s). I did different things by printing out his favorite recipes and asked him to follow the directions to do it. Or, I asked my son to repeat some of the recipes that he had done before. Practice makes perfect as some of them are going to be in college soon. Parents are not there to cook for them on a regular basis. Teaching them cooking is a way to set up a foundation of independence. Of course, younger children will need monitoring. If your lunch hour is so short that you can barely have enough time to do any monitoring, try to do it for dinner. Even once a week is better than zero.

4) Weekend outdoor activities are always on my to-do list. Unfortunately, attractions are not easy to find on the internet, except the very, very well-known ones. I must admit that there are many local ones truly the gems and you will be pleasantly surprised. So, I encourage you to explore your local options.

Also, if you think about some places you drove by in the last few months, do you recall some that you wanted to add into your bucket list at the time? That is a good start.

I use my phone GPS/Map app to record all the attractions that we may want to visit in the future. It gives me some ideas how far they are from the house.

Or join this organization, North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) Association (No, it is not my sponsor. But I have been their member for 3 years. I love it and it’s truly a great deal for families with children between 10-18) With a membership that covers my entire family, we have plenty of places to go and check out. The money we saved from each individual museum admission fee paid us back the membership fee.

Mom and Me (Interactive Journal)

I bought this book about 3-4 years ago. Some pages are a little bit more difficult for young children. But it is great for children age 10 or above. It is a way for parents and children to learn more about each other.

You will be surprised about the opinions of your kids of certain things in this world. It is also a great way to know what is on your kid's bucket list. It will give you some ideas of what you can do or spend time on in this summer holiday.

After my purchase, I found that there are more versions added every year with different covers. I did find this one which has the closest setup in the content. Click on the link below to check out the sample pages and details.

Once you know the content, feel free to explore more and other options, such as mom and daughter.
